Introduction to Field Training Workshop

9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Sunday, April 12

East Grounds, Des Plaines State Fish & Wildlife Area

Presented by Perry Dlugie CPDT-KA, of On Point Training, the workshop will serve as an introduction for new handlers as well as a review for handlers who have participated in previous years’ GSPCI Dog Days of Summer Field Training.

Held both indoors and outdoors on the East Grounds of the Des Plaines State Fish & Wildlife Area, 30507 S. Boathouse Road, Wilmington, Illinois 60481.

From I 55 exit on North River Road. After exiting, turn east to the first intersection on your right, Boathouse Road. Turn south on Boathouse Road, the entrance to the parking lot will be approximately ¼ mile on your left.

Highlights of the workshop:

  • How to establish a positive relationship where your dog sees you as the leader.

  • How to be a mentor, and help your dog teach themselves.

  • How to find time to work with your dog every day.

  • The fundamentals of “go with me, come to me, and stand still.”

  • Introduce and demonstrate how to use the command lead, an integral part of this training system. We have a limited number of leads available for $35. To reserve your lead to be delivered at the workshop Venmo $35 to @pdlugie. The leads can also be purchased online from retailers like gundogsupply.com and dogsunlimited.com.

  • The morning session will be indoors in a classroom style setting (coffee, donuts and lunch provided). After a break for lunch, we will finish the day working dogs outside.

  • There will be extra dogs available if you want to work with them.

  • Time allowing, there may also be a short field demonstration.

Notes for the day:

  • Check-in begins at 8:45 AM.

  • We recommend a kennel or other means for your dog to remain safely in your vehicle during the classroom sessions.

  • We recommend that you purchase a command lead in advance, or at least bring a 6’ lead and 1” solid leather collar for your dog.

  • All-weather gear is recommended, we plan on spending time outside, including possibly in the field for a demonstration.

  • Dogs are not allowed in the building and must be on a leash or check-cord at all times, including in the parking lot or field. Please do not run dogs in the field prior to the workshop.
